How do you deal with a problem like the “fishbowl?” That’s what DIY enthusiast and blogger Holly Grace called the beautiful bay window at the front of her house. While she loved the natural light these windows let in, she also always felt like she was on display in the room. Despite living in a quiet cul-de-sac, Holly and her family get a lot of foot traffic around their home. While relaxing in the living room, she often had the feeling she was on display. Neighbors taking a jog or walking their dogs could look directly into her home thanks to this “fishbowl” effect. Motorized shades became her family’s perfect solution, allowing her to easily close the shades when needed, or open them to enjoy the natural light. “Never in my life, did I ever think that I would have motorized blinds in my home but I can tell you that after having these blinds for a little over a month, I am ready to replace every window in my home with this incredible piece of technology,” Holly wrote on her blog. She was concerned when she heard the phrase “motorized blinds” that these new window coverings would be heavy on technology and light on style. But her local dealer Smart Shades Systems helped her choose the perfect fabric for her shades so she could protect the light and bright feel of her living room space. They even rehung her curtains after installing the shades! Holly was also initially concerned that the motorized shades might be noisy, but living with the shades in her home she’s impressed by how quietly and seamlessly they fit into her space. “They are quiet, and the motor has a perfectly smooth operation of the blinds,” Holly wrote. The fishbowl was always Holly’s favorite place to have her morning tea. Now her shades open automatically to let in the morning sunshine and close at night to protect her family’s privacy. App control allows Holly to set the ideal schedule for her smart shades and then enjoy as her shades work around her schedule. Tea in the mornings with natural light? Check. Privacy at night so the whole neighborhood can’t peek in her home? Check! Plus, motorized shades are a huge help for a DIY fanatic like Holly. Recently Holly upgraded the beautiful chairs in her living room with fabric paint. By using fabric paint, Holly was able to give her chairs an inexpensive upgrade to better match her country chic décor. But fabric paint, like all furniture, can easily fall victim to UV damage from the sun’s harsh rays. Thankfully, now Holly can keep her DIY magic looking fresh longer by scheduling her shades to block the sun during the hottest parts of the day. “These blinds, I can set on a schedule so that they lower and open automatically whenever I want. So, I can set a schedule so that my blinds close when I know the sun is going to be beaming through my window — I don’t even have to be home!” Holly wrote in her painting fabric chairs DIY tutorial. Motorized shades can now not only protect her family’s privacy, they can also protect her DIY projects. Cutting down on sun glare can protect furniture, art, and paint from fading due to UV rays. It’s also a smart way to save on energy for your home. “The ease and tranquility that these blinds have brought to my home have drastically altered our day-to-day life,” Holly wrote.
